Which of the following contains the most antioxidants?

a) Strawberries
b) Raspberries
c) Prunes
d) Plums

The answer is c or d.

Prunes are dried plums and both are exceptionally high in antioxidants. What are antioxidants? As we wander this great earth our bodies are constantly under attack by things like pollutants, the foods we eat. When these things get into our body it causes oxidation. Oxidation is caused by these things called free radicals. I always get a mental picture of a little cell with a peace symbol and long hair saying "Make Love, Not War, Man."

Unfortunately free radicals aren't nearly so cute! They get into our systems and because they have a free electron, go around trying to hook up with our perfectly happy cells. It is NOT a happy union! They cause oxidative damage. As this damage occurs it can translate into all sorts of nasties; cancer, hardening of the arteries, heart disease, Alzheihmers, stroke...in short, it is NOT cool to have these floating around in our bodies!

The way to counteract this radicals is to make sure your diet is high in antioxidants. They ride in on their little white horses and sneak up stealthily behind the free radicals and steal that extra electron (in some cases) stabilizing the radicals who then cut their hair, go back to college, and end up working on Wall street.

We can't avoid free radicals and we can't kill all of them, but we can help by eating foods high in antioxidants and avoiding some of the things that intentionally introduce free radicals such as smoking, pollution, sunlight (excessive exposure without sunscreen), and overuse of alcohol.

So eat your prunes! Not only are they high in anti-oxidants they are also good sources of Vitamin A, Potassium, fiber (which is where they get their reputation for being great Roto Rooters), as well as Vitamin C.
