Running with the Slurpee slurpers…or rather running PAST them.
Wicked awesome run! It amazes me how sometimes a run can be just so effortless. I felt like I was flying, although I was definitely working. All my split times were excellent and nothing hurt at all.
The one thing that really bugged me, though, is that I passed the middle school cross country team. They were all walking and about half of them were carrying super sized Slurpees. Now our district has a rule about what can be provided to the kids, and I’m pretty darn sure that slurpees with 65 grams of sugar, don’t fall into that category. Not only that, but what kind of a message does it send that we’ll go out on a “run” and get slurpees? Of course as I passed them one little turkey started mocking the way I ran. I stopped, turned and looked at him and said “Excuse me, are you mocking me?” He looked embarrassed and apologized. I said thank you and ran on, only to be mocked a few hundred feet later as I PASSED THEM (and their coach…good job, coach) by three girls all sipping on sugar.
ARGH! Shouldn’t our educational leaders who are coaching sports teams be advocating a) proper nutrition and hydration (such a high concentration of sugar on a run would, at best, give one a tummy ache), b) advocating embracing ALL people’s physical activity, even skinny old ladies, and c) have them out there actually RUNNING on their runs so that they can build their stamina, and practice their craft? I haven’t been to a cross country meet in a little while, but last time I checked slurpee drinking wasn’t one of the sports.
Ah well…maybe it was, um, Treat Tuesday. ?? I don’t know. I just don’t think it sends a good message to the kids, but I have a GIANT soapbox when it comes to what our kids are eating and drinking these days.
