Good Samaritan Paddle on Ebey Slough
Kayaked out on Ebey Slough today. We started exploring the little eddys that come off the slough until we hit dead ends and shallow water. Then we went out onto the main slough. I saw some litter in some reeds, so I went over and grabbed it and put it on the front of my kayak. We kept on paddling out for about an hour, against current (not very strong current) and turned back. On the way back the wind was kicking water up onto my kayak and tossed my litter off! Ack! I couldn’t get to it before it sank, so I felt guilty. So on the paddle back I picked up more litter. I found, all told, nine pieces. Thank you JERKS who can’t seem to manage to keep your garbage in your boats! This is a wildlife sanctuary and if that stuff keeps happening, it will be closed to the public. They’re probably the same selfish @#%@ who go racing by us kicking up wake, not bothering to slow down or think “Hey, if I kick high wake up to people so low in the water, it might endanger them so maybe I should slow down.” The jet skis are the WORST! Coughing pollution, making noise…I know lots of people enjoy them, but I’ve never really quite understood the point. But that’s just me. I much prefer to get places under my own steam. Fortunately not everyone on a powered boat is that way, and today there were only two. Everyone else slowed down so all they did was give us a nice little “ride”. It’s when you’re around a corner and suddenly they’re right there and you haven’t had time to turn into the wake that it’s scary! Man I love being out there. Saw a HUGE osprey (a couple, actually) but this one guy flew really low over us giving us a show. Also saw a bald eagle hunting, and lots of other birds. It’s just amazing how close it is to the city, and it feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere.

Me in the reeds, picking up some litter.

My haul. Yes, I wore a dress kayaking. It’s a running/fitness dress so it dries SUPER fast, so I like it for kayaking.
