Seafair Torchlight 8k Race in Seattle

Wow! What a HOTTTT run! It was in the 80s and very humid when it started. The race is fun, though. You get to run through Seattle and the last two miles is on the Seafair Torchlight Parade route, so all along both sides there are TONS of people cheering. The best part is all the kids! They line up on each side holding their grimy little hands out for high fives. I can’t help it. I have to go for most of them!

I have usually run a much much faster time, but a few things inhibited it. One, my leg is feeilng better but not perfect and I actually grew a brain before the race started and said, “Hey Genius! Don’t re-injure the leg on a silly little fun run!” and the second issue was the heat. It was hot. It was like Africa hot. I don’t know that I’ve run a race for speed in that kind of heat…endurance races, yes. Never a fast race. Even so, my times were very good and negative splits after mile 2. I think I hit mile 1 9:54 (slow, lots of people in front of me). Mile 2 was 10:01 (up the viaduct so very hilly, MORE people in front of me…srsly could not get my pace on mile 2). Mile 3 8:34 (not THAT is more like it!). Mile 4 9:52 (WTF? How did I slow down so much? Probably the high fivin’) and mile 5 9:01.

No injury and decent heat, probably could have pulled out about an average 8:30 mile, but oh well. I still had fun.

Poor Roy signed up for the 5k, but didn’t finish. He was in excrutiating pain. I wish he’d go back to the doctor! This is getting old!
